I've been giving some thought to what it would take to create a self replicating meme and immediately the church of scientology.
The created a self replicating meme that "Scientology is the answer" and that "the world must be clear".
It seems that one of the first things one can do is point out the importance of improving the mind and having a very specific process to do it. It is the process that does the indoctrination and enforcing the meme.
Add to that the social reinforcement that happens when scientologists get together and the competition of go to the next level and get "clear" and it's a pretty powerful meme.
Memes are powerful, but they can also evolve. Will everyone really follow the same process? Without strong institutional organization, it seems likely that knockoffs will appear, and groups will splinter.
I can not remember exacly where I read this, and the exact details are in a "cut & paste" archive on my old computer so I can only give you the gist of it atm.
l.ron hubbard had made statments about "if you want to get rich start a religion" I also have a book he wrote about brainwashing. Its in ebook form, but is again on my dead computer. If anyone is interested I will see what I can do towards the end of January. L.ron had also supposedly studied some cult or other and for all points and purposes gutted the ideology while keeping main structure intact. This is like the idea of doing genetic engineering using a virus. You remove the dna payload and replace it with the dna you want to insert. Not a bad idea as far as hijacking an existing meme and "re-purpose" it. l.ron did this intentionally. I dont see why someone else couldnt.
If you could re-purpose an existing Meme, what would you do with it?
As far as evoloution goes, you could increase your chance of success by altering a meme that has been with humanity, or at least our culture, for a very long time with little or no change. Hmm....it would have to be a more primitve meme. Any ideas?
I have a cut and paste text file of information I have collected from the web. It might contain copyrighted material so I dont want to post it here.
Other things I would look at is viral marketing ebooks and courses on the web, and buzz marketing on amazon.
questions that need looked into: how do you get people to talk about an idea? lots and lots and lots of people talking?
how in this day of information over load do you get an idea to stick in someones mind? what makes an idea sticky?
What is a "meme", sounds like a belief/Motivation trigger ?
i think the ideas that stick to peoples minds the most are those that they can reffer to somehow, something they will Picture in their Mind and feel they've already semi-experienced. What do you think?
i heard a interesting program on the radio here in sweden the other day about "movie psycology" where they explain that the movies with the Broadest audiencefeedback is the ones where the main character is a "regular" in the beginning but finnish of as a "somebody". because most people can refer to that Regular dudes thoughs and dreams.
that means, that the more specific personality type a character has. the more narrower audience it will get since less ppl can refer to it. just look at tv commercials for an instance
interesting Thread Btw!
